HUGO SELENSKI

 WHO WILL BE HUGO'S ATTORNEY?
Back to Full Blog

It is still not certain who will represent Hugo Selenski in the Kerkowski/Fassett case. A preliminary hearing on the current charges is scheduled for this week. Guess it won't happen if Hugo doesn't have an attorney by then. Apparently Demetrius Fannick wants to be privately paid versus the piddly salary the county would pay him. Now that he is well known locally and nationally, he sure isn't hurting for legal work. Maybe he thinks Hugo is guilty in this case and doesn't want to take the chance of marring his reputation at this point. Atty. Fannick is an excellent defense attorney and a mighty good looking one!
This second case will probably have the same outcome no matter who represents Hugo. Guess we will find out this week whether or not Fannick will take tha case or move on.
Any Hugo admirers out there willing to contribute to the Hugo Selenski defense fund to keep Atty. Fannick as Hugo's attorney????? Hugo would be eternally grateful to you I'm sure!

At about $250,000 for his services, its going to take a mighy lot of private donations into Hugo's defense funds.

What they (the author of that statement) don't understand is that Attorney Fannick did his job. No matter if Hugo was actually guilty or innocent, Attorney Fannick proved that there was reasonable doubt. That's all he had to do and he did that.

No one could really tell who pulled the trigger and that is why he was acquitted of the crime.

Obviously bodies found in your yard is gonna bring out red flags and point to more probable guilt than innocense.

Was he set up? I dont know.

Was he involved somehow? I dont know.

I think things may be totally different with the new trial. I think there are more credible witnesses involved.

But regaurdless, Attorney Fannick and the rest of the Defense Team did their job.

First, the DA's office did not put on a good case and maybe this case should not have went to trial to begin with. (saving tax payers $$$). Atty. Fannick received the same fee a public defender would have received in this case. He is on a special board of lawyers that the system goes to when there is a conflict w/ the Public defenders office, he was the only atty. that was qualified to try a capital case. Whether or not Hugo is guilty we don't know, if you want to be technical the property belonged to Tina Strom. Maybe they were paid to get rid of the bodies.....or maybe it did happen just like Pat Russin said, we won't know. And I will agree I do not have much sympathy for the victims in this case. They chose to live in a world of drugs and viloence. When you live that life style things like this are a possibility. They weren't at the wrong place a tt he wrong time, they put themsleves there. I feel sympathy for the mom's except for the fact that they pulled the race card. All i have to say to that is Bull Shit. the case was not there, and there was no excuse on the DA's office for missing the boats that they did. Not filing papers, not knowing what your paid witnesses would say, SHOULD NOT HAPPEN! I would guess Fannick is in it for the long haul, he's put a lot of time in to drop out, not to mention that will cost us more money if he does. It would take too long to get a new lawyer up to speed.

I have to agree with most of you that Atty. Fannick did his job. I feel sorry for him that he only received public defender's salary. This shows very much character on his part. He defended this guy for about $1 an hour and never let that get in his way. Hugo was lucky to have a dedicated, intelligent lawyer as Fannick.

I find fault in the DA office in this case. First and foremost, did they totally charge Hugo correctly?? If they had somehow worded the charge as an accomplice, Hugo would not have gone free. Weighing the evidence, I cant figure out why they didnt think this through better.

Secondly, not filing the paper for the escape?? Totally unexcusable. If the escape evidence had been able to be brought into the trial, who knows what else could have been determined. Why escape if you are innocent???

Thirdly, did the DA actually think that normal everyday people would decide to end a man's life on circumstantial evidence or evidence from plea bargaining, drug dealing witnesses with no character and proof that they lie??

And the icing on the cake.....two expert witnesses for the prosecution with conflicting testimony!!! Law 101 could have avoided this situation.

I feel for the families of the victims. The victims put themselves in harms way by their drug habits, however, the families are the ones that are suffering.

I hope the next case is handled better so the person/persons responsible can come to justice.

I will be the first one to commend Attorney Fannick on a job well done. Also, Hugo probably will not accept any other lawyer other than Fannick. What people need to realize is that Hugo was very involved in his own defense as well. Hugo has nothing but time in prison and he is busy reading up on the law practices.

Also, feel free to have sympathy on the victim’s families for their losses. However, you should have SEEN how these victims/familiy members treated the members of Hugo's family. They blurted out threats at them (and I mean threats on their lives), they pushed them in the lines at the court room doors, and they were nothing but trashy people with very misplaced anger to take it out on Hugo's family! Do any of you even realize what the state did for them? The state paid for them to stay at a hotel the duration of the trial, paid for ALL of their meals, and treated them like gold (even though they were actually just as scared of these urban drug dealers as everyone else was). Originally the state agreed to pay for the two mothers and the one brother, then the girlfriends showed up with children, and the grandmother showed up, and other family members just kept coming out of the woodworks - and the state didn't want to rock the boat and put their foot down, so they just kept paying for everything! Yes, they are entitled to be at the trial just like any one else was, but it should have been at their own expense. Hugo had many family members at his trial that sat through long grueling days with nothing paid for them. I just think everyone needs to look at both sides of this. If the state had such a strong case, then why did they feel they had to pick up that HUGE tab? Yes, this case was very costly to the state, but most of the expenses were unnecessarily created by the state themselves!

They have to pick up the tab because according to Michael Coles "they entail more pre-trial preparation time, more attorneys, longer jury selections, more expert witnesses, and a heightened level of due process. They are 3 to 5 times longer, and the defendant is less likely to simply plead guilty to avoid a trial if there is a chance of being executed."
I think you guys need to read a lot more.
